Durham has a daunting array of excellent breakfast options on Saturdays. At the farmer’s market alone, it’s really tough to decide between a Pie Pusher’s biscuit, a Monuts Donut or a breakfast burger from Only Burger. We often find ourselves strolling up Foster St. to Daisy Cakes or venturing further up the hill to Scratch. If we’re driving, then Elmo’s, Nosh or Brigs get thrown in the mix for their more traditional breakfast offerings. And on very rare occasions – when a cure-all breakfast is needed stat – Honey’s potato …
The first weekend in March, two Durham-based food trucks are teaming up with a local farm to create fresh, locally-sourced eats.
Chirba Chirba and Pie Pushers will join the folks at Coon Rock Farm (outside of Hillsborough) to serve up a lunch of dumplings and pizza using meat, produce and eggs from the farm. Pretty cool, eh?
On Saturday, March 3 – the trucks will be in Durham in front of Motorco and on Sunday, March 4 – they will park at Cliff’s Meat Market in Carrboro.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I understand the appeal of the fancy dinner, the candlelight, the white linen table cloths and the army of silverware and china – really I do. But, personally – to celebrate the day of all things heart shaped – I prefer the dark dives, wing-sauce covered fingers, giant burgers, ice-cold longnecks. My husband has indulged me with drives to Ronni’s Wing Shack outside of Winston, Zack’s dogs in Burlington and take-out pizza.
This year’s plan involved papusas at Los Comales and bowling …
February 25 is another auspicious day in Durham. Not only will it be your last opportunity to check out the now renowned Luchadoras competition for a while, it is also the date of Jeff and King’s annual takeover of Wheels Fun Park.
During the day the lovely masked Luchadoras will once again take over Motorco. Last time, it sold out quickly so I recommend getting there early or buying your tickets ahead of time. This bout will involve even more luchas action …
Jimmy’s looks like your average fast food joint serving burgers and dogs, but Jimmy’s is like stepping back in time. Jimmy’s is filled with Durham nostalgia – old basketball pics, historic shots of downtown Durham, a cooler full of bottle Cokes and snapshots of the owner and his family. On the back of the paper menu, you’ll find the story of this family-owned restaurant and its long history in Durham.
When we stopped in on a Saturday …
It’s time again for the annual Urban Ministries of Durham Empty Bowls fundraiser – only this year the planning crew has upped the ante with a food truck rodeo afterparty at Fullsteam.
This year’s event will be held on March 8, from 5:30 pm to 8 pm at the Armory. Eleven restaurants will donate their time and serve up various concoctions in the hopes of winning the “best soup in Durham.” Counter Culture is donating coffee and the following restaurants are participating:
Guglhupf

Thrills from the Grill
