Not food related but definitely Durham-centric, there’s a new gift shop downtown that focuses on local, handmade goods. Just across the street from Loaf and the Carrack, Durham Craftworks is like a mini version of the annual Rock & Shop event. It’s a small space chock full of cool.

Durham Craftwork’s mission:
To create a retail space in which local craft artists have the opportunity to shard their handmade work and talent with the community. We are committed to serving local craft artists in an …

I admit I was more excited than most about the opening of Defy Gravity, a warehouse full of trampolines, in the more industrial part of Durham. One of my “older” friend’s first reaction was an instant and guttural “No, I will break a hip” (I use quotes in this instance because said friend is in his forties and in no way old). Though not food related in any way, Defy Gravity has proven an excellent way to help work off the Carpe Durham lifestyle – the tacos, …

The Orange County Speedway is just 30 minutes outside of Durham and in addition to speeding car action there are two reasons their weekly races should be on the radar of Durhamites. One is Moe’s Tavern, covered years ago by RPP here on Carpe Durham, and the other is the fried bologna burgers at the speedway.

Just outside of Rougemont, Moe’s Tavern is Durham County’s Northern-most bar. The music may scratch a bit and heads may turn when you walk in – but the local crowd is …

Saint Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and whether you’re into celebrating or not – this year it falls on a Saturday and it’s a good excuse to raise a pint or two.

First off, Bull McCabes is opening their beer garden. They’ve purchased the green space next door and will have picnic tables, cornhole boards, bocce, etc. Should make for a great spot to hang out not just on Saint Patrick’s Day but during approaching warmer months.

March 17 also marks the one year anniversary of …

February 25 is another auspicious day in Durham. Not only will it be your last opportunity to check out the now renowned Luchadoras competition for a while, it is also the date of Jeff and King’s annual takeover of Wheels Fun Park.

During the day the lovely masked Luchadoras will once again take over Motorco. Last time, it sold out quickly so I recommend getting there early or buying your tickets ahead of time. This bout will involve even more luchas action …

This weekend is one of those magical ones where many of us won’t have to set the alarm when we crawl into bed Sunday night. There is no mail on Monday, schools and banks are closed – but what does this mean for you fine Carpe Durham readers? It means you can stay out late on Sunday night celebrating Dr. King in our very own special Durham way with a chocolate-themed dance party.

This Sunday, the Pinhook and King Kenney will once again come together to throw an …

It couldn’t be a more perfect time to hop in the car and take a trip to Ganyard Hill Farm’s pumpkin patch here in Durham. Not too far out of town, you can escape from the malls and city grit and have some fun on the farm!

There are plenty of activities to entertain the kids, but even the most sophisticated of adults will find something to appreciate. Vintage barns, rusty farm equipment, and stacks of gourds will bring you a …
