Another new fun beverage on tap in Durham is Sourwood Cider. We were able to snag a glass of the tasty cider on tap at Geer Street Garden. From Sourwood’s facebook page, Sourwood is making European-style dry ciders.

It’s a refreshing change from many of the super sweet ciders available. With the every growing part of the population avoiding gluten, a local cidery is an exciting addition to the bull city.

Sourwood describes their cider as “crisp, slightly tart, and dry with a light apple nose. It has been compared …

Out of the primordial sludge, the Ponysaurus has risen!

Last Wednesday, Geer St. Garden tapped its first keg of Scottish Ale (reviewed here) from the Ponysaurus nanobrewery.  Brewer Keil Jansen was on hand to receive compliments, drink his own beer, and smile.  Go drink a few!

The Cookery is hosting the inaugural (Thank you for not using ‘first annual’) Rent Party to benefit Housing for New Hope, an organization that aims to end homelessness through housing, healthcare, and other support.  The event is $50 with reservation required for the 11/23 soiree.  It will be a night of Gatsby reminiscent indulgence to include hors d’oeuvres from the Catering Company of Chapel Hill, open bar (including Ponysaurus brews on tap!), and the Mint Julep Jazz Band.

The event is a revival of the …

If you ever find yourself taking a few wrong turns and ending up in Raleigh *shudder* you can take solace in the fact that there will soon be a bit of Durham there to comfort you.

Wine Authorities’ second location!

Coming this October to the Mordecai/Oakwood neighborhood at 211 E. Franklin Street.

The Raleigh location will offer the same great service and “wine is fun for everyone” attitude that has made Wine Authorities a Durham favorite since it opened its doors in September 2007.

To ensure that the …

Keil Jansen says he is “brewing the beers beer would drink if beer could drink beer.”  And I agree.

Jansen has long been involved in the homebrewing community (ie: TRiangleUnabashedhomeBrewers and Brew Durham) and recently quit his day job to pursue his nanobrewing aspirations.  He has teamed up with duo David Baldwin of Baldwin& (AdAge’s 2012 Small Agency of the Year) and Jennifer Gardner of prettyfab PR on the business end and Nick Hawthorne-Johnson of The Cookery for logistics.  Ponysaurus is the first commercial …

Mattie B’s, the newest venture from the folks behind much beloved Six Plates, opened this past week in one of the strip malls near Hope Valley. Mattie B’s is sandwich/pizza place with a diverse beer selection. Despite a pretty large menu, Mattie B’s is an order-at-the-counter, casual joint. I recommend grabbing a menu, ordering a beer and sitting down for a minute instead of deciding at the counter.

In addition to the dozen or sandwich and pizza options, Mattie B’s is specializing in house-made chips …

If you haven’t checked out one of the Museum of Life and Science’s After Hours events, the Science of Beer is probably the one to attend. This is the fourth annual Science of Beer event at the museum and this year they’ll have brews from over 15 North Carolina breweries.

In addition to imbibing, folks will have the chance to learn about beer making, why certain beers appeal to certain people, excellent foods and beer partners and more.

Bar Lusconi is a downtown beer and wine bar that soft-opened this week, so don’t expect perfection or a wide food selection just yet. However, I was very happy with everything we tried last night and can report no kinks in the service. There’s a great article in the Herald-Sun that covers the details of the bar opening. It’s owned by Timothy Neill and Jesse Gerstle, who opened Peccadillo last year, which is a somewhat secretive cocktail bar in downtown Carrboro. Bar Lusconi is at a …

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I understand the appeal of the fancy dinner, the candlelight, the white linen table cloths and the army of silverware and china – really I do. But, personally – to celebrate the day of all things heart shaped – I prefer the dark dives, wing-sauce covered fingers, giant burgers, ice-cold longnecks. My husband has indulged me with drives to Ronni’s Wing Shack outside of Winston, Zack’s dogs in Burlington and take-out pizza.

This year’s plan involved papusas at Los Comales and bowling …
