Need an outlet for all that holiday spirit? Concerned about the health of the environment? Consider donating to the following Kickstarter campaign for GreenToGo.

The reuse/recycling advocacy group  Don’t Waste Durham is starting a reusable takeout container program called GreenToGo. The program will reduce the waste from single-use takeout containers. The group has already persuaded many local restaurants to discontinue their use of styrofoam containers, as you may have already taken note of around town. One of the main players in the group is a …

If you’ve ever been lured in by that jelly doughnut sign on 85 near mebane and you’ve stopped at NC Jelly Doughnut, then you have a good idea of what you will find if you seek out Durham’s newest doughnut shop – Carolina Glazed Doughnuts. It’s a pretty bare bones operation and while you won’t find rosemary infused glazes or siracha stuffed crullers, you will find solid classic doughnuts. These are the doughnuts we grew up eating – glazed, cinnamon sugar, sprinkle covered, chocolate dipped, lemon curd filled, dense cake …

If Chez Moi was in a trendy store front downtown, there’d be a line around the block. As it stands, you should hit up the Chez Moi bakery anytime you happen upon their van, especially when their parked outside cocoa Cinnamon and you can pair one of their baked goods with a cup of coffee.

Chez Moi keeps their menu simple with just a few options daily. Always on the board is a rum cake, a panna cotta and an ice cream “cakewich.” It’s for this cakewich that …

Purple Monkey is a bubble tea shop/ice cream parlor in a strip mall behind the Target on 15-501 with plans to expand into fair foods. Yep funnel cakes and corn dogs.

Currently they’re offering a wide variety of iced boba teas, blended frozen boba teas, coffees, a selection of hand-scooped Hersey’s ices creams, Dippin’ Dots, shaved Hawaiian ices, milkshakes, fruit smoothies, baked goods, canned Asian drinks and a small variety of penny candy and toys. It’s a bit of a mishmash as they figure out …

It’s time for the second block party of the year in Old North Durham.  Will & Pop’s will be there.  So will Capt. Poncho’s, among others.  Though of particular interest is the presence of (former) Old North Durham resident, Pork in the Road.  It’s a great opportunity to taste some goodies from a food-truck-in-the-making.

Since I took a shine to Pork in the Road when it was campaigning for crowd-sourced funds, I contacted Mr. Thompson to catch up on his progress.  He has plans drawn up …

There’s a relatively new Halal Middle Eastern grocery in Durham on Chapel Hill St. (across the street from The Cookery) called Taiba Market. Still early, some of the shelves are bare but it looks like they will soon have a case full of baked goods, fresh pita, a hot bar and more.

Currently Taiba Market has a freezer full of meat, and a few aisles of non-perisables, cookies, candies, flours, beans and more.

Durham has a new butcher/sandwich/sweet shop in the spot that housed Glassworks for years – Rose’s Meat Market and Sweet Shop. Owned and operated by a husband and wife team, Rose’s Meat Market is a welcome addition to the Bull City.

The fresh, newly painted white space is filled with cases full of meat, counters of fresh pastries (macarons, pies, bread), a dairy case (local milk, veggies, cheese, beverages), freezer (pasta, fresh stocks) and shelves of local goods like Big Spoon Roasters …

We’ve covered the Wednesday special before here, but Ninth Street Bakery has never gotten the full review that it deserves. It’s both a hidden gem and a long-time Durham treasure. A wholesale bakery and cafe, Ninth Street’s baked goods can be found on shelves around town. The cafe offers daily soup specials, custom sandwiches, pizza and some excellent daily vegan specials thanks to chef Matt Props.

Around since 1981, Ninth Street Bakery focused on local sourcing, sustainability, organic and vegetarian eats long before it was trendy. The …

Quick look at the newish mobile bakery in town, Milk & Honey. Specializing in mini cheesecakes, Milk & Honey sets up regularly in Fullsteam and the Durham Art Market. Milk & Honey eats are also available at Cocoa Cinnamon, which is where we finally broke down and gave two of her petite treats a try.

Perfectly portioned, the cheesecakes are that great combo of light and fluffy, indulgent without being overly rich. We tried Chocolate Lavendar and Lemon Blueberry. Both had a thick, crisp graham crust. In …

In the same strip as a Petco and a Sports Clips, deep in the retail hell of Southpoint mall/Target there’s a new oasis – Rise. Durham’s new doughnut/biscuit shop, Rise is the brainchild of Tom Ferguson (Durham Catering Co.). A bright small space filled with doughnut art, Rise has a couple of high top tables (no chairs) and a side bar with a handful of stools. Rise is more of a grab-and-go type place for those seeking a quick breakfast or an early afternoon sugar rush than …
