Need an outlet for all that holiday spirit? Concerned about the health of the environment? Consider donating to the following Kickstarter campaign for GreenToGo.

The reuse/recycling advocacy group  Don’t Waste Durham is starting a reusable takeout container program called GreenToGo. The program will reduce the waste from single-use takeout containers. The group has already persuaded many local restaurants to discontinue their use of styrofoam containers, as you may have already taken note of around town. One of the main players in the group is a …

Remember those days of hitting the farmer’s market, strolling into Piedmont, ordering Eggs Piedmont and settling down for some bluegrass music? Piedmont Brunch used to popular and it was a sad day in Durham when they suspended it.

Now, thankfully, it’s back. They’ve been serving just a few weeks and the crowds aren’t back yet, but the great food certainly is. We popped in two weeks ago after making the rounds at the market. Brunch is served starting at 10:30 am and the menu is made up of a wide variety …

So this year more than ever it feels like the entire Bull City is gearing up to do Mardi Gras proper. And to top all the awesome events going on, we just got word that the Esquire Network’s Brew Dogs will be attending and filming Durham’s Mardi Gras parade.

There’s even an official site.

The events kick off on Friday with the Pinhook’s Queer di Gras – “This gay ass extravaganza invites you to dress to impress in your finest feathers, glitter and masks. Do it!”  More info. …

Another new fun beverage on tap in Durham is Sourwood Cider. We were able to snag a glass of the tasty cider on tap at Geer Street Garden. From Sourwood’s facebook page, Sourwood is making European-style dry ciders.

It’s a refreshing change from many of the super sweet ciders available. With the every growing part of the population avoiding gluten, a local cidery is an exciting addition to the bull city.

Sourwood describes their cider as “crisp, slightly tart, and dry with a light apple nose. It has been compared …

Did you know Durham has its very own soda company? We spotted Brood Soda on the shelves at our beloved beer mecca Sam’s and were really impressed by the flavor variety. Available in six flavors, three of which pay tribute to local universities, there should be a Brood for everyone.

Based on the lengthy, clever descriptions listed on Sam’s cooler, we went with a Spicy Brood (thai chili and cloves). If you’re a fan of Blenheim’s spicy ginger ale, then you’ll dig this corn-syrup free soda – …

Quick look at the new pizza joint from Bull City Burger and Brewery’s Seth Gross. Located in the old firehouse just behind Bull City Burgers, next door to Dos Peros, Pompieri Pizza quietly opened their doors last week. Pompieri (firefighters in Italian) has a really similar vibe to its sister restaurant – large open room, order at the counter, lots of communal tables, metal pie plate serving dishes, and a bar with a handful of Bull City Burger’s beers. The pizzas are wood fired and and the mozzarella is made in-house.

I wasn’t going to do a list of New Year’s festivities this year, but we received several requests and emails – so here ya go – a quick list. As usual, it’s in no way complete.

Our money is on the Wusses and the Pusses Yacht Rock Motorboat New Years at Motorco. This party is aways a good time with throw-back tunes, seventies nautical costumes, amateur fireworks, a balloon drop and plenty of free champagne at midnight. Bonus this year – the food at …

We stopped by the new taproom, Triangle Pint & Plate, from the folks at Triangle Brewery this past Friday night.

Packed on its first weekend in business, Triangle Pint & Plate is, of course, offering up a wide selection of Triangle Brewery beers on tap (other beers available in bottles/cans) and a few wines by the glass. Until they start serving food, Triangle Pint & Plate does require a dollar membership card (the plate part of the name is set to come early next year).

We’ve …

Out of the primordial sludge, the Ponysaurus has risen!

Last Wednesday, Geer St. Garden tapped its first keg of Scottish Ale (reviewed here) from the Ponysaurus nanobrewery.  Brewer Keil Jansen was on hand to receive compliments, drink his own beer, and smile.  Go drink a few!
