Taco Nacos

In that eye-catching, impossible-to-miss bright yellow/red building on University (just behind the Target), Taco Nacos is the latest taco/papusa/torta joint to occupy that  space. Formerly Coma Rico (among other things), Taco Nacos has done the most with the space behind the check-cashing venture.

They’ve painted, upgraded the menu and gotten rid of the gift shop in the back. Don’t be put off by the line at the check cashing/convenience store in the front, just head straight back to the taco counter where you’ll find an impressive menu of tacos, meat/rice plates, tortas and papusas. The tacos are all $2 and the al pastor and asada are stand outs. Tortillas, chorizo, salsa, etc. are all made in-house. Follow them on instagram to see how they do it.

On a recent Saturday afternoon we stopped in after a Target run looking to satisfy a papusa and horchata craving. They satisfied on both fronts. I recommend the revuelta pupusa (pork/cheese). It’s made fresh and comes out steaming topped with the classic vinegary cabbage slaw. Top it with a squirt the house made salsa verde if you like a little kick or the house made chipotle if you like it really spicy. There’s also a giant bowl of salsa fresco by the register.

If you’re really hungry, a torts or platillos is a better option. Everything is affordable and excellent. The guy at the counter speaks perfect english so no worries if taqueria ordering intimidates you.

    Just got back from lunch with a small group of people. We all got assorted tacos but saw a few pupusa and torta orders coming out that looked really good as well as a caldo of some sort that looked wonderful.

    Ordered tripe and tongue and both were completely satisfactory. They crisp up both on the grill before serving so both were crunchy yet still flavorful. Tried bites of the chorizo and it is absolutely great. Asada seemed too dry and chicarrones were overdone, but neither were bad at all.

    It’s obvious that they make the tortillas and are probably the best I’ve had in Durham, far better than Los Comales (or Guanajuato, whatever) or La Vaquita or Super Taqueria. They seem a little thicker than normal which held everything together nicely even when laden with meats, onion, cilantro, radish and salsa.

    As far as the salsas go, the one in the crock by the register isn’t their salsa fresca, the salsa fresca comes with the order. The one in the crock by the register seemed like a guajillo-infused pico de gallo that was really good, especially considering their salsa fresca was a bit bland. The tomatillo salsa verde wasn’t very hot but tasted good and the red sauce had the normal heat for chile de arbol (it’s chile de arbol, not chipotle). All of the hot sauces were good but none really packed a punch per se.

    The service was great and overall I really liked it a lot except one strange thing — the chips were completely stale. I don’t care one bit about having house-fried chips with my salsas as I treat them merely as conduits for salsa consumption, but these were in the tough to chew/left a strange bitter taste in your mouth stale. Hopefully just a one-time problem and definitely not going to stop my from coming back
