Purple Monkey

Purple Monkey is a bubble tea shop/ice cream parlor in a strip mall behind the Target on 15-501 with plans to expand into fair foods. Yep funnel cakes and corn dogs.

Currently they’re offering a wide variety of iced boba teas, blended frozen boba teas, coffees, a selection of hand-scooped Hersey’s ices creams, Dippin’ Dots, shaved Hawaiian ices, milkshakes, fruit smoothies, baked goods, canned Asian drinks and a small variety of penny candy and toys. It’s a bit of a mishmash as they figure out exactly what they’re going to be.

I’m a sucker for bubble tea and was excited to give Purple Monkey a try. Nice to have an alternate to Li Ming, which requires cash or Tutti Fruiti, which requires making it past all the frozen yogurt options. We stopped in a few weeks ago and just ordered two boba iced drinks to go – a green tea and thai coffee. Both were a little too sweet as many of their drinks are made with syrup verses brewed tea. Next time, I’d go with the frozen variety. Also it’s worth noting that I’ve heard really good things about their shaved ices, which are topped with red bean paste, fruit, boba and sweetened condensed milk.

The staff at Purple Monkey is extremely friendly and helpful and decor is pretty fun and funky with bright lavender walls. I hope Purple Monkey figures out what works and what doesn’t, refines their menu and focuses on the things that make them unique – the bubble teas, the unique smoothies (fresh dorian fruit, red bean, taro), the shaved ices, the baked goods (housemade Pumpkin creme custard brûlée served in a quarter pumpkin). Then again, maybe it’s nice for parents to be able to order Dippin’s Dots or standard Hersey’s ice cream for the kiddos while they sip on bubble team or enjoy a spoonful of red bean paste.
