Somewhat quietly amid the openings of Dashi and Gonzo’s, a new sushi/Japanese joint opened up in American Tobacco. Located in between Moe’s and Tobacco Road, Basan has been discovered yet by the masses. You can still easily stroll in on a Friday or Saturday and grab a table without waiting, a rarity in Durham.

Basan is also offering another rarity in downtown Durham, quality sushi. We’ve tried Basan a couple of times and have been impressed with the quality and cut of the fish they’re serving. We’ve learned to keep it simple. The sashimi and crudo plates have been much better than their complicated rolls. Without the standard Triangle sushi staple BOGO, Basan’s specialty rolls can quickly add up. NOTE: Basan does have the standard pencil, more affordable sushi form with the simpler rolls as well, but you have to request one.

Basan does a good job catering to all diets with a large selection of vegetarian and gluten-free option. We haven’t delved into their dinner options aside from sushi yet, but the menu looks promising.

It’s worth noting that Basan is doing ramen if you find yourself with a craving that can’t withstand the hour wait at Dashi.

(order the sashimi combo – pricy at $26, but the cut, quality of the fish justifies )

It’s nice to have a decent sushi place downtown that the crowds have yet to discover.
