Halal Bros./Halal Haven

The Halal Bros. food truck is the brainchild of two childhood friends from upstate New York who wanted to bring New York street food and authentic Pakistani favorites to the streets of Durham. Halal means permitted or lawful. Halal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. Halal means there are no pork products on the Halal Bros. food truck. The menu is made up of beef, lamb, chicken, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

We stopped by on a recent Friday night when they were parked outside of Cocoa Cinnamon. It made for an excellent, quick dinner without having to fight the crowds that swarm downtown on Friday and Saturday nights.

We tried the Nihari plate, a traditional Pakistani beef stew served over rice with a couple slices of naan ($10) and a gyro ($8).  Perfect for cooler weather, the beef stew was spiked with flavor and just a bit on the spicy side. The flat, cold naan and tomato garnish weren’t needed. I’m a sucker for a gyro and this one didn’t disappoint. Beef and lamb, it was a pretty classic variety just spicier and the meat was ground, instead of sliced.

Based in Cary, this truck doesn’t show up in Durham as often as many trucks, but it seems they are parking outside Cocoa Cinnamon every other Friday. Keep up with them on twitter.
