Gregoria’s Brunch
We put up a quick post about Gregoria’s back in 2012, but since then they’ve moved buildings, expanded their menu and started offering brunch on Sundays.
It’s getting harder and harder to find a brunch spot in Durham where one can just stroll in grab a table and relax until noon rolls around and the bloodies and mimosas start flowing. But Gregoria’s is still off the beaten path enough when it comes to Durham’s dining scene, that you can easily walk in on a Sunday morning no matter how large your party is and enjoy some Cuban twists on classic brunch options.
They’re offering plantain pancakes, yuca hash, chorizo omelet, cubano sandwiches and so on. Starting a noon, they have drink specials that include $3 “bloody marias,” and $10 bottomless mimosas.
We opted for the fruit salad (fresh yogurt, local honey, sea salt and mint). It was a lovely mix of papaya, mango, pineapple, melon and strawberries.
We also tried the “torregjas,” cuban-style french toast, queso fresco, guava maple syrup and the huevos rancheros. The french toast was a large portion of excellent french toast, but it was missing the queso fresco and we couldn’t taste the guava in the syrup.
The huevos rancheros was pretty simple – fluffy, scrabbled eggs served atop black beans and garnished with a bit of cheese and a blanket of salsa. Again, the menu advertised it was salsa verde, and it showed up without it. But despite some inconsistencies between Gregoria’s menu and the dishes served – Gregoria’s was still everything you want in brunch food – filling, flavorful and comforting without having to plan ahead or wait in line for a table.
