In just six weeks, Whiskey has been transformed into a craft beer bar called Criterion. Slightly brighter, Criterion feels like a cross between Surf Club and Whiskey. Gone are the dress code, the cigar smoke and the artisan cocktails – the bar and the bathrooms are the same.

Criterion has been renovated with a line of 10 booths, a few two-person tables and some beer garden tables out front.

Rhys is still at the helm but also at the heart of this new set up is a familiar face, Ben Fletcher (beloved bartender at Surf Club). If you’ve spent any time at Surf Club, you should be well aware of Ben’s passion for beer. This love is celebrated at Criterion with a list of well-curated beers on draft and by the bottle.

As it is serving liquors drinks and no food, Criterion is a private club but memberships are just a penny for life.

Stopped in the other day. I find 12-ounce pours for all beers regardless of alcohol content to be rather weird and off-putting. Also not the “unique” selection that The Fed often boasts, but that probably comes with time, as most breweries won’t sell you their interesting stuff until you sell a lot of their wares.
