Chamas Tapas Menu

Posted by DID 26 Aug 2013 2 Comments

Chamas is your average Brazilian steakhouse, the type famed for their gluttonous meat parades, well-stocked salad bars, stiff drinks and puffy cheese breads. Sure, this type of meal with it’s all-you-can-eat meat fest has a certain appeal, but that type of indulgence is rare experience for most.  I’m guessing in an attempt to lure in more regular diners, Chamas has recently introduced a tapas menu.

With almost 25 small plates, most of which are priced in the $5-$7 range, Chamas is now more accessible for a casual weeknight dinner out. We stopped by on a recent Thursday when all tapas were buy two, get one free and all draft beers were $3. Four of us ordered three tapas each.

With 12 plates on the table, the quality varied greatly. The biggest misses were surprisingly the meat dishes. The skirt steak (served covered with crispy onions in a cast iron skillet) was tough and overcooked, as were the priciest tapas plate on the menu, the lamp chops ($12). The wins were the fried goat cheese covered in honey and caramelized onions, the blue cheese/fig/chorizo/bacon bruschetta, the sauteed mushrooms and the house-cured sausage. A cheese plate (three unidentified Manchego-like cheeses), the meat plate (a ham and a salumi), a dish of almonds and olives, the mussels and a shrimp cocktail were all perfectly fine.

Is Chamas the best tapas game in town? No. But as the mild fall approaches, Chamas has great outdoor seating that is almost aways available and will make a good spot to eat a few small plates and sip a  caipirinha.

I live about a five-minute walk from Chamas, so this is a highly interesting development. I’ve tended to go there only about once a year, because I’m not often in the mood to eat a gargantuan quantity of meat. But this may well get me there more often.

Very interesting development, indeed. Perhaps a bit more traffic will help Chamas up its tapas game. Is the 3 for 2 a standing Thursday offer?
