Hungry Leaf

Hungry LeafI recently stopped by Hungry Leaf, a newly-opened, revamped version of the old Chopped Greens on Erwin Road. Hungry Leaf offers salads and wraps – both off-the-shelf and “build your own” versions.

Although this type of salad concept is popular in other parts of the country (Chopt, anyone?), salad-oriented fast casual restaurants seem to struggle a bit in the Triangle. I’m a big fan of well-executed, customized salads though, so I was anxious to partake.

The space itself is pretty small, with a handful of indoor and outdoor tables. There’s a focused menu with roughly 10 pre-determined salad combinations that are freshly made to order. You can also design your own salad or have it made as a wrap. The menu includes vegan and gluten free options.

The two staff members behind the counter were very friendly and helpful as I navigated the menu. I ended up ordering the Quinoa Mexicana salad, which is made with romaine, quinoa, black beans, grape tomatoes, red onions, green peppers, cheddar cheese and corn nuts ($6.50). I substituted corn for the red onions (no charge) and added avocado for $1. The suggested dressing, a “spicy ancho ranch”, is apparently made from scratch and went well with the ingredient combo.

There are some interesting and healthy ingredient options, like red cabbage, edamame and chopped kale. I enjoyed my salad – the portion size was ample, the ingredients were fresh and the salad wasn’t overly dressed (a pet peeve of mine). The piece of bread that accompanied the salad was a bit stale though.

Hungry Leaf is a nice addition to the fast casual restaurant scene in that part of town, with healthy options and reasonable prices.

I went here and thought the salad didn’t have enough fillings – for the $1 extra I paid for avocado, it had like 3 chunks. Not impressed.
