Big Mike’s BBQ

Posted by DID 21 Aug 2012 One Comment

A bright red mini barn perched atop a trailer, Big Mike’s BBQ gets points for originality. This eye-catching mobile BBQ joint (not sure the food truck moniker applies here) is the brain-child of Michael Markham and, though based out of Apex, makes regular stops in Durham.

The menu is pretty simple -bbq plates, sandwiches, ribs, wings, and traditional sides (macaroni, potato salad, slaw). Both the classic bbq pork sandwich ($6) and bbq plate (meat and two sides for $8) come heaped with slow-smoked, eastern-style pulled pork that is rich and flavorful even without adding vinegar sauce. (Big Mike’s does provide other sauce options if vinegar isn’t your thing.) The sides are all fine, nothing special – but the meat is the real attraction at this barn.┬áThis “truck” is serving up truly noteworthy que.

Big Mike’s is also offering up something called redneck nachos. Even with no description, the name alone intrigued us enough for an order. Turns out redneck nachos are more of a Frito pie than they are nachos. Big Mike’s redneck nachos are a small Styrofoam container of Fritos piled high with baked beans, pork bbq, blue cheese slaw and hot sauce. Messy and impossible to eat without at fork, the redneck nachos pack a powerful flavor punch thanks to the vinegary smoked que, the sweet beans and the blue cheese slaw. This is hearty, filling fare and rivals the Geer’s Pile as a guilty indulgence.

After the nachos, we didn’t have room for dessert but Big Mike’s does offer banana pudding (with and without bacon) and Moon Pies.

Big Mike’s can be found at Fullsteam on most Friday nights.┬áKeep up with them on twitter and their site.
