Dain’s Place Breakfast

Posted by DID 24 Feb 2012 One Comment

Durham has a daunting array of excellent breakfast options on Saturdays. At the farmer’s market alone, it’s really tough to decide between a Pie Pusher’s biscuit, a Monuts Donut or a breakfast burger from Only Burger. We often find ourselves strolling up Foster St. to Daisy Cakes or venturing further up the hill to Scratch. If we’re driving, then Elmo’s, Nosh or Brigs get thrown in the mix for their more traditional breakfast offerings. And on very rare occasions – when a cure-all breakfast is needed stat – Honey’s potato casserole fits the bill.

After last Saturday, Dain’s Place has officially been added to our go-to breakfast list. Dain’s opens at 9 am on Saturdays and serves a somewhat surprising menu. The rotating menu when we were there offered chilaquiles, panbasos, a breakfast burger, steak & eggs, a prosciutto sandwich and French toast made out of doughnuts. They also serve breakfast cocktails and Joe Van Gogh coffee.

I went with the panbasos (salsa-drenched bread that has been toasted and topped with potato, chorizo, lettuce and queso fresco) for $8.99. It was – in a word – awesome. Salsa verde, sour cream and a nice fruit salad (bananas/oranges/grapes) came on the side. It was an extremely satisfying breakfast and would make for an excellent cure for indulging in one too many of Dain’s beers the night before.

Someone else at the table ordered the breakfast burger minus the burger – a vegetarian drawn in by the description of a housemade sweet potato biscuit topped with apple butter, smoked gouda and a sunny side up egg. It came with a side of tater tots and our waiter prorated the price to $6. She loved it. The friendly staff was also willing to whip up a plate with two eggs, toast, bacon and a side of fruit for a friend who didn’t want anything too heavy.

The coffee was strong, the staff friendly and the food satisfying – it was the ideal Saturday morning breakfast spot. Note for the families who flock to Elmo’s, it was easy to stroll in at 9:30 and grab a booth, no wait. Bonus: Dain’s was showing cartoons on two of their TVs.
