Bull City Chili Challenge

Posted by DID 15 Jun 2011 One Comment

This Saturday, June 18, the Piedmont Pepper Pods and friends will once again take over Central Park for the Ninth Annual Bull City Chili Challenge. There will be winners in four categories: Texas Style, Freestyle, Restaurant and Junior. And there will be a salsa competition.

I know the thought of eating chili and salsa outside at 11 am might not the be most appealing thing one could do on a Saturday in June. But we’ve been to the Piedmont Pepper Pod’s annual Bull City Chili Challenge two years in a row now and it’s a lot of fun.

For those who keep track of such matters, this is the only cookoff in the Triangle sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) and it’s open to anyone who’d like to enter. Folks can register in any division – CASI and Freestyle are $20, Restaurant and Junior divisions are free (however restaurants are asked to bring a minimum of five gallons of chili). This is a family-friendly event with games and entertainment for kids and adults, including music from bluegrass band the Blue-Tailed Skinks.

The cook-off is open to the public from 11 am until 2 pm (or till the chili runs out). Chili turn-in is at noon, so go early to get the best tastes. Tasting kits consist of a spoon, napkin and 2 oz. cups for sampling chili.

Admission is free and it’s $4 for a tasting kit. All proceeds benefit the Durham Central Park.

About the Piedmont Pepper Pod group:
Annually raising more than $150,000 for charity, the Piedmont Pepper Pod is the North Carolina chapter of CASI. The pod is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and is involved with an average of 10 cook-offs a year across the state. The organization has partnered with the March of Dimes, Piedmont Epilepsy Society, Boys Club, volunteer fire departments and others to meet the mission of CASI, which is to promote chili and raise money for charity.
