Pelican’s SnoBalls

Posted by DID 22 May 2011 4 Comments

A new snowball shop opened this month on Roxboro, conveniently located just blocks from some of our favorite taquerias. Pelican’s Snoballs does “New Orleans” style shaved ice with flavored syrups poured over it. They offer over 100 flavors and four size options, the smallest is an affordable $1.50. It’s a nice cooling treat on a hot afternoon or after a spicy taco.

Flavors are pretty varied and it’s hard to choose. Options include classics like strawberry, cherry, grape and more adventurous flavors like tiger blood, Shrek, toothpaste and fireball. On a warm Sunday afternoon, we choose a peach and pina colada. Both were refreshing, fluffy and light.┬áThe pina colada however was a snowcream variety and much sweeter than the traditional flavor. A kiddie size has no fat and 100 calories if you’re into that sort of thing. We will definitely be stopping in again to try some of the more adventurous flavors over the summer – maybe dill pickle or Cadillac juice.

Pelican’s is amazing and fun! I was so excited to see they had a location in Durham. I had been to the one in Carey last year and fell in love immediately.

Pelican’as has a lot of flavors, and some will seem a bit silly/crazy (toothpaste or dill pickle for example). My experience is that the flavors taste exactly like what they say they will – so keep that in mind when ordering. This makes for some really fun flavors. For example, a friend of mine had wedding cake. I tried it. It really tasted like wedding cake! I don’t know how to describe it, but it was fun.

The staff are very nice. You get an amazing snoball for almost nothing. I went yesterday and am planning another trip today.
