Blue Sky Dining

Posted by DID 21 Nov 2010 5 Comments

Blue Sky Dining seems to have a different business model than most of the other trucks around town. It’s a mobile caterer/busy family take-out option. Every day Blue Sky offers a different meal. The daily meals are posted online at the start of the week and made up of a meat dish, two sides and a dessert for a set price, usually in the $9 range. Meals are also posted on twitter and facebook. If a meal is posted that strikes your fancy, then you just call and order before noon for dinner pick-up.

Mike Nieri, aka Chef Mike as the owner refers to himself on the Blue Sky website, parks the truck near the intersection of 54 and 40 each day and he’s also started showing up around town. We were able to give the truck a try at the Art Walk this past weekend. For this event, he had two $6 sandwich options – a beef brisket and a crabcake – both served with homemade potato chips.

We tried the crabcake sandwich, which was a large crabcake with lettuce and tomato on a fresh bun. It came with homemade tartar sauce on the side. The tartar sauce and homemade potato chips stole the show. The chips – thin, crisp, just salty enough – were addictive and the tartar sauce was indulgently rich and studded with sweet pickles. The cake itself was heavy on the crab, which was nice but the tartar sauce is what really made the sandwich stand out.

I’ll try to stop by for one of Chef Mike’s nightly dinner-to-go options in the near future and let you know how that is. With Mom’s Truck gone from the triangle scene, Blue Sky Dining may just fill the homestyle meal on wheels niche. Hope to see the Blue Sky truck showing up at more events around town.

The brisket sandwich was very tender and the BBQ sauce was very nicely complimented by the homemade cole slaw. It was delicious!

I’ve known Chef Mike for years, and he’s awesome… Every meal he’s cooked for me has been absolutely delicious. His $9 meals are well worth the money. I encourage everyone to give them a try!
