The Fish Shack – CLOSED

Posted by DID 19 May 2010 8 Comments

The Fish Shack is pretty much exactly what you’d expect it to be. It’s open, airy, covered in kitschy fish art and well, lots of fun.

The menu consists primarily of fried shrimp, fried fish, fried crawfish and fried oysters. You can get them served up po’ boy style, on a bun, as a taco filling, atop a salad or in a basket.  It is what it is, a fish shack.

We went with the Shack Attack (a po’ boy bun filled with the Q Shack’s well-known beef brisket and lots of fried, sweet crawfish) and the whiting basket with two sides, which was on the special board.

On a spring afternoon, when it’s still not too hot, the garage doors were thrown open and we chose a spot at one of the picnic tables on the patio.  Wednesday at lunch, the place was packed.

The whiting was good, fresh and satisfying (though honestly, not as good as Ocean Ave.). I ordered it with corn on the cob and okra. The okra seemed to be the same as that served at the Q Shack . It came with some pickled okra on the side, which was a nice touch. The Shack Attack was awesome – if a little excessive – mounds of beef drenched in bbq sauce topped with dozens of tiny fried crawfish.

The Fish Shack does have a few non-fried items on the menu – a low country boil, several kinds of gumbo and a grilled fish of the day – if you’re into that sort of thing.  All in all, the Fish Shack is affordable, fun and a nice addition to the casual side of Durham dining.

Bonus: You can bring in that singing “Billy Bass” you got as a gag gift at the company holiday party  years ago and the Fish Shack will give you a free catfish basket.

Is this located where the Q-Shack used to be? Did they close the Q-Shack to open this up?

It’s next door to the Q-Shack, where Rockwood Filling Station used to be.

I’ve had the rock shrimp po boy there twice now. A reasonably priced filling, tasty sandwich. The flounder po boy was good too. if you like Q Shack you will probably like this place too. They have the same sides.

I’ve been going at least once a week for the boiled crawfish. I guess I’ll try some other things on the menu when the season ends.

I’m a fan of the shrimp boil – it’s got some kick to it! And I love that both shacks are right next door to each other – perfect casual dining – hardest part is making the choice between the fish or the bbq (guess that is what the Shack Attack is for).

Just in case anybody reads this and decides to go, the Fish Shack is no more. The place was great and the food was excellent, they just didn’t get the traffic.
