C’s Soul Food
C’s Soul Food just opened, and although they’re still working out the scheduling kinks, there’s some great food to be had (but only if you’re able to drive past its neighbor, the amazing Caribbean Taste, without stopping). The owner had a couple friends in the store to keep her company, and I overheard that she’s been wanting to open her own restaurant for years. They serve breakfast, lunch (the usual takeout fare), and dinner plates. The menu appears to rotate daily, and some of the items sound incredible: liver pudding (fourth pudding sighting so far), mackerel cakes, hog jowls, pigs’ feet, BBQ neck bones, liver & onions, and salisbury steaks. There were only a few options when I went in today so I went with the staples: baked chicken (dark meat), collard greens, and mac & cheese. The chicken was delicious and perfectly cooked, the collards were fresh, and the mac & cheese was basically elbow pasta drowning in melted cheddar. I couldn’t leave without getting some of “Grand Ma’s Special Banana Pudding,” which approached Wimpy’s in awesomeness. Everything plus a (very) sweet tea came to less than $10. C’s is another example of the great soul food that seems to abound in Durham. I’m already dreaming of a dinner of hog jowls, brussels sprouts, and stewed apples. C’s Soul Food (map) |
